Cristiano Ronaldo's World Cup Athlete Data Used By WHOOP in New Ad Campaign

WHOOP Turned One Athlete's Data Into a World Cup Ad. Your Program Has a Locker Room Full of It.
Their are so many highlights from FIFA World Cup 2026™ - Canada, Mexico and the United States that created unforgettable experiences, but this is one of my favorites because it relates to athlete performance data.
Athlete Performance Data is a Revenue Source
Cristiano Ronaldo's heart rate hit 176 bpm on the goal that made him the oldest player to ever score twice in a World Cup match. WHOOP 's new "In the Blood" campaign turns Cristiano Ronaldo's real biometric data into global advertising by sharing his performance data, including Ronaldo’s WHOOP Age of 29 - twelve years younger than his birth certificate! It's running in front of an audience north of 670 million.
That's not a wearable ad. That's real athlete data turned into proof, turned into a $10.1B company with 85% of it recurring revenue.
Here's what should keep every team and athletic department paying attention: WHOOP had to build that relationship one athlete, one contract, one campaign at a time.
You don't have that problem.
You already have the data. GPS tracking in practice. Catapult and Zebra load data. Wellness check-ins, sleep, HRV, recovery scores from whatever wearable your strength staff issued this year. Game and performance data from every rep of every athlete on your roster, across every sport, every season. This is WHOOP's entire marketing engine, except it's not sitting in one company's hands. It's sitting in yours, right now, mostly unused.
Access To Performance Data Is The Problem
The reason it's unused isn't that the data isn't valuable. It's that nobody in your building has a clean, verified answer to the questions a WHOOP-style program forces you to ask: Who actually owns this athlete's data? Did they consent to it being used this way? Which vendor's platform is it locked in? What happens to your program's exposure if a sponsor, a media or brand partner, or a fantasy platform wants to license it and you can't prove the chain of consent and compliance with other regulatory and legal governance requirements?
WHOOP could answer those questions because it built the relationship with the athlete directly, implemented internal data governance practices, and contracted with the athlete, team, and union stakeholders. Your athletic department has dozens of vendors, hundreds of athletes, and no single system tying data, consent, and rights together. That gap is exactly why the opportunity is still sitting on the table.
Closing that gap is what we built HONOR to do
So how can you leverage athlete performance data to build your brand and those of your partners? How can you enhance your existing or new products and services using this data to increase fan engagement and drive revenue?
HONOR gives teams, athletic departments, leagues, and their data, NIL, and brand/broadcast partners a robust, automated version of the infrastructure WHOOP built in-house without requiring you to become a wearable company or a media agency to use it.
HONOR lets you:
- Secure verified athlete authorization for how their data is used, in real time, across every source and every vendor feeding your program.
- Track exactly how that data is licensed, shared, and monetized, with an auditable trail that protects your program instead of exposing it.
- Turn compliant data into new revenue: content partnerships, sponsor activations, media deals, and fan engagement programs, on top of data you're already collecting, without adding legal risk.
- Make sure the athletes whose performance created the value get their fair share of it, which is the difference between a compliant revenue program and the inevitable lawsuit that will drain dollars and take more of your time and energy to address.
The next college sports business model isn't going to be built on ticket sales alone. It's going to be built on the recurring revenue programs your athlete data can generate - the same recurring revenue WHOOP built its whole valuation on - if the consent and rights infrastructure exists to do it safely.
WHOOP spent over a decade and real money proving that real athlete data can be used to tell a story and sell products and services - a business people pay for every month. You don't need to prove that anymore. You need the compliance engine and marketplace that lets you act on it.
Turn Your Performance Data Into Revenue
If you want to see what that looks like for your program, reach out to our partnerships team and we'll show you how to build it around the data you already have.
A note to the athletes reading this: if your performance data is generating this kind of value for someone else, you deserve to know how it's being used, and to be paid your share of it. That's not a footnote at HONOR - it's the whole reason we started the company.
